Big Capacity, Small Footprint: 5 Reasons to Love 2-Post Racks

Big Capacity, Small Footprint: 5 Reasons to Love 2-Post Racks

Posted by Steve Bowman on Mar 21st 2024

If you’re concerned that a two-post rack will be too small and unsteady to hold all your gear, you might need to reconsider. The latest two-post racks have all the vertical capacity of four-post racks, can solidly hold from 300+ to 800+ pounds, have a small enough footprint to fit anywhere in a room, and are much easier to move around than bigger server racks and server cabinets.

If any of those features sound good to you, below are some details about the five reasons to love two-post equipment racks. They have other advantages, such as their open ventilation and instant access to equipment, but the five we highlight are unique to two-post open frames.

  • 1.Big Capacity, Small Footprint

For fitting a lot of equipment in the smallest possible floor space, you can’t beat a two-post server rack. They typically come in capacities up to 45U, which can hold a wall of gear that’s about 7 feet high. But while the footprints of four-post racks and server cabinets usually require 2 to 4 feet of depth, a two-post rack might need as little as 1 foot. This makes it easy to fit them just about anywhere in a room, including use as a home server rack.

  • 2.Solid but Mobile

If a two-post rack and its base are made of steel, it usually can hold all the weight you need it to. (NavePoint has models that hold 330, 660, or 880 pounds.) But despite their heavy loads, two-post equipment racks usually can be fitted with caster wheels that make it easy to move them around. Such mobility is a big plus, not only in rotating a rack so you can better reach its rear cable ports, but in relocating it within a room or even to another room.

  • 3.For the Floor or Desktop

While the vast majority of open-frame four-post racks and enclosed rack cabinets are floor-standing, many two-post server racks are made for desktops as well. This ability to do double duty makes them versatile and cost-effective. (NavePoint’s desktop racks have depths as compact as 11.5 inches, allowing them to go just about anywhere.)

  • 4.Low Cost

Of all the rack enclosures available on the market, you can’t beat the prices of two-post models. They cost about one-third less than four-post racks. (There is an even bigger price difference among NavePoint’s two-post desktop racks, where the regular-duty desktop racks cost about half as much as the heavy-duty desktop racks.)

  • 5.Quick Assembly

Both two-post and four-post open-frame racks are fairly easy to assemble using only a screwdriver and a wrench. The Quickest Assembly Award goes to two-post models, which comprise only about four to six pieces, compared to about 20 pieces for four-post racks.

NavePoint’s 2-Post Racks

NavePoint offers two basic designs of two-post open-frame racks. The racks shaped like an upside-down T have large capacities, up to 45U, and are placed either on the floor or on caster wheels. The L-shaped desk racks are shorter, up to 12U. Both designs are made of a rugged, cold-rolled steel, and a few models come in a lighter-weight aluminum.
